Beautifully restored 300 year old house of character, with thick stone walls, high ceilings and exposed beams, furnished and equipped to the highest standard, with private swimming pool, garden, courtyard and terraces...a truly unique house.
Malta is a fantastic place for a holiday - there's something for everyone. A rich and interesting history has left plenty of sights to see, and you cannot miss the beautiful churches that pepper the island. There are some lovely beaches, great restaurants and nightlife (for those seeking it). Throughout the year, and particularly during the summer months, hardly a week goes by without at least one festa, when villages celebrate their feast days with processions and fireworks.
Our house is in Zejtun (pronounced Zaytoon), one of the oldest villages in the South of the island, tucked away down a quiet lane just off the church square. This is the real Malta, living amongst the friendly locals, yet only a stone's throw from all that Malta has to offer.
Zejtun is ideally situated, being 15 minutes from the airport at Luqa, and 15 minutes from Valletta, the island's capital, where there are plenty of shops and attractions. In addition, Zejtun is less than 10 minutes drive from the nearest beach, St. Thomas Bay, from Marsascala with its many bars and restaurants and the beautiful fishing village of Marsaxlokk, with its brightly coloured fishing boats and daily market. For those who don't want to drive, Zejtun is well served by cheap local buses and taxis are also readily available. In fact, taking a bus-ride is an experience not to be missed!
Imagine, waking to the sound of church bells, enjoying morning coffee on your own private, sunny terrace and buying fresh bread daily from the baker that passes your door each morning. Well, that's all possible when you stay at Il Gawra Mohbija (Jowra Mob-bee-ya) - The Hidden Jewel.
If you are looking for a home away from home, then this is the place for you. Sleeping nine people in comfort, this beautifully restored 300 year old four bedroomed character home has been equipped and furnished to the highest standard and is available all year round.
The accommodation briefly comprises:-
Downstairs
A beautiful entrance hall with barrel-vaulted ceiling leads into a private central courtyard. The courtyard is sunny for much of the day, but there are also shady areas underneath the arches. This is a great place for barbecues and dining al fresco.
The lounge is spacious with comfortable leather sofas and a portable CD/radio/cassette player.
There is a study/TV room with flat screen television, DVD player and telephone.
The dining room has a lovely oak table seating up to ten and archway through to the kitchen. There is a telephone that uses Easyline telephone cards, available from local shops.
The fully fitted kitchen has oak cupboards and granite worktops, and is equipped with sink, gas hob, electric fan oven, fridge freezer, microwave and dishwasher, as well small appliances such as toaster and deep fat fryer.
"Well room". This cool and airy room connects the courtyard with the back garden, and is a lovely place to sit in the heat of the day.
The downstairs bedroom has a king size bed and ensuite bathroom.
The separate downstairs cloakroom/WC is accessed off the courtyard.
The walled rear garden has a private swimming pool. The pool gently slopes and has been designed so that adults can stand up anywhere in it. The pool is therefore not deep enough to dive into. The garden area has its own lemon and orange trees providing natural shade. There are flower beds providing year round colour. The pool area is tiled with non-slip tiles making it suitable for children who will also enjoy playing in the sandpit. There is a fully tiled poolside toilet and shower room.
Upstairs
The large master bedroom has a luxury 6’ super king size oak bed, matching furniture and ensuite shower room. Double doors lead to a balcony overlooking the garden and pool. There are doors interconnecting with the adjacent bedroom.
The third bedroom has three single beds. This room may be accessed from the Master bedroom or from the first floor terrace.
The family bathroom is fully tiled and comprises a large bath with shower attachment, basin, toilet and bidet.
From the terrace there is access to another twin bedroom and also from this terrace there is an external staircase to the courtyard.
The laundry room has a large American ‘Speed Queen’ washing machine.
The house benefits from a solar water heating system, which provides ample hot water for baths and showers. This is supplemented with an electric immersion heater for backup.
From the upstairs landing there is a stone garigor (spiral staircase) leading to the roof. There are washing lines with plenty of space for drying clothes. For sun worshippers, the roof terrace provides an excellent spot for sun bathing. On the roof there is also a look out tower, from which there are stunning views of the island. How many churches can you count?
This is truly a special place to spend your holiday. Linen and bathroom towels are provided and changed weekly, but please bring your own pool/beach towels. Josephine and Salvu, our caretakers, will clean the house and the pool once each week, but may be prepared to clean more often by negotiation.
Malta is a safe country with a low crime rate, but guests are reminded to take sensible precautions and insure themselves and their effects against all risks.

Arrivals and Departures
To allow our caretakers adequate time to prepare the house we prefer departing guests to vacate by 10am on the day of departure and new guests to arrive after 4pm. However, it may be possible to arrive earlier or leave later by prior arrangement.
